This Saturday night we launch our Capital Appeal to restore the splendour of our Heritage Sanctuary, just a few weeks after our Farewelcome. That afternoon, we brought together our community to celebrate the memories held in that sacred space and dream of the ways our restored heritage will enhance our ability to engage as a spiritual, cultural and values based community. We have been able to begin the project through the generosity of bequests from Ann Kirby and Fritzi Ritterman, and now we turn to each and all in our community to build our future together. We will launch our appeal at our Purim Masked Ball, the first of many opportunities in the year ahead to return together in community and celebrate who we are, who we are becoming.
It is auspicious that we do this just after Shabbat Zachor, the Shabbat before Purim. Shabbat Zachor asks us to recall horrible events in our past - the first unprovoked vicious attack against civilians, led by Amalek against our ancestors as they arrived in the Sinai wilderness, just after they fled from Egypt through the parted seas into freedom. This story of Amalek is the shadow lurking behind the story of Esther, the story of Purim. There, Haman, the new Amalek, is defeated by Esther, Mordecai and the Jews, a story in which fortune is reversed. “This is why Jews observe the fourteenth day of the month of Adar and make it a day of merry-making and feasting, and as a holiday and an occasion for sending gifts to one another.” (Esther 9:19). See below for our celebrations of Purim, Wednesday evening March 16 and Thursday March 17. Zachor, we remember - and we maintain our faith that there can be reversal of fortune and days of celebration.
Faith leads to action. Let us act in many ways, to “put our money where our mouth is” and do what we can to support those in strife and need, while at the same time we create a conscious community at Emanuel Synagouge whose good work will help bring about a better society and world.
Come join us and dance the night away at our Purim Masked Ball as we launch our Capital Appeal to transform our future.

Ukrainian Crisis We are all shocked by the unfolding war in Ukraine. There are a number of Jewish organisations which have established funds to provide humanitarian aid to communities there. If you would like to donate, you may wish to consider one of these funds:
Flood Disaster Relief We have been devastated by the floods here in NSW and Queensland. There is great need as the rescues continue and the recovery begins. If you would like to make a donation, we have included links to three websites for you to consider.
This week we begin reading the book of Vayikra. The book is also known as Torat Kohanim or Sefer Kohanim, as it deals with the role of the Kohanim, the Priests, in their service, enabling the whole community to serve God.
We welcome Shabbat with the spiritual, meaningful, music, prayers and stories of Shabbat Live
